Mark Pullinger's LicensingOn Thursday 22 March, following an invitation from the church wardens, we drove down to Surrey to witness the Licensing of The Revnd Mark Pullinger as Team Vicar of the Sutton Team Ministry. The Team Ministry covers the three churches: Christ Church, St Barnabus & St Nicholas. The service was conducted in St Nicholas church by the Right Reverend Nick Baines, Bishop of Croydon in the diocese of Southwark. The Team Rector at Sutton is The Revnd Sarah Mullally.
The church is a traditional 3 aisle church with a rood screen leading to the choir. The pews were extremely uncomfortable.

We recognised Keren Pullinger, Steve Berry, James Parsons & Alison Walker in the congregation.
The service was preceded by handbell ringing by the Bellringers of St Barnabus. They were well rehearsed and played 4 or 5 pieces including Jesu Joy of man's desiring and received a warm round of applause.

The bishop spoke about his total inability as a gardener but his understanding of the necessity of pruning. He introduced Mark as quiet, thinking-before-speaking, gifted in music and bringing a wide experience to bear on his new ministry. The bishop hoped that the congregation would be willing to prune off the branches that were draining the body and not producing fruit, so that the body as a whole would be more fruitful.
After making the necessary legal and spiritual promises Mark was duly declared licensed for a period of 7 years.

Everyone was invited to St Nicholas Community Hall after the service for refreshment.

The music used in the service was:
- Praise with joy the world's creator (tune: Praise my soul the king of heaven)
- Fruitful trees the Spirit's sowing (tune: Brother let me be your servant)
- Jesus we have heard your Spirit (tune: Ode to joy)
- Eat this bread, drink this wine (Taize)
- King of kings, majesty
- Ye that know the Lord is gracious (tune: Blaenwern)
The readings were:
- 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a
- John 15:1-17
