New Year Party

Just failed once again to get a decent picture of 'our' fox - saw him/her when we opened up the curtains before beginning our fireworks display.
Our fireworks were not as elaborate as the ones we saw from New Zealand and London on the tv, but very satisfying none-the-less

Christmas 2010

We raised a glass to absent family...
Thanks to a trip to the seconds department of a factory shop for a well-known brand we have special plates to eat off this year!
Well the Christmas present fits ...!

Belvoir Castle by Candlelight

Against broadcast advice and in temperatures around -6C we made the drive to Belvoir Castle in the dark - and the final walk up to the entrance was "like Narnia"
The castle seemed to have all the Christmas trees in Rutland inside

and most importantly, lots of log fires
We fortified ourselves with a festive meal in the Stewards Restuarant
We clambered round in the candlelight, listening to the various musical offerings including the Belvoir Wassailers and some much more serious music on Flute and Harp
This looks my size...!
We left before the Carol Service, uncertain of what the drive home might hold in store and therefore did not get to 'meet' Her Grace, the Duchess of Rutland.

The 210th Birthday Party (Part 2)

The following day the overnighters and some new guests met for Sunday lunch at Burleigh Court
... and the balloons came too ...

Hazel and Robin were charged with proposing a toast which contained some self-penned 'poetry' and finished with ...

...We also found some "Gentle Thoughts for Today as We Grow Older" and selected one that
we thought was appropriate for each of you:

For Mum - I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

Nana - Ageing: eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.

Dad - He who hesitates is almost certainly right.

Finally, to Mum and Dad, you're not 60
You're 18 with 42 years' experience.
So that just makes you even more experienced Nana!
So, a toast... .to Mum, Dad, Nana, family and friends... .
a toast to a wonderful 210 years and
many more to come!
Happy Birthday!
Cheers.

The 210th Birthday Party

Robin & Hazel made batch after batch of cupcakes - with each batch a different and more exotic flavour
Mum made two fruit cakes

On the day we met at the Link Hotel in the snow
There was barn dancing to "The Funkies and the Fogies"
and "The Ladows" played through their extensive Shadows repertoire
Roger got on better with his dancing after he changed to a new pair of shoes
and with Jacqui as partner was even awarded a certificate!
There were the formalities of the cutting of the cakes

Hazel encouraged the part along with her bubbly presence
But all this was only part 1 ...

Anniversary treat

We went down to Worcester to see "Phatfish" in concert on the Friday night.
On Saturday we went exploring and found the Wichenford Dovecote (N.T.)
In the adjacent farm buildings I found this tractor and trailer still proudly bearing the banner "Just Married"
In the car park of Webbs of Wychbold I came across this piece of artwork labelled "Survival"

Christian Praise 2010

I haven't been to this event for many years (I last went as a guitarist!) - Mum had never been. Almost arrived late because of heavy traffic in Leicester (Diwali?). Good band - but I only recognised one of them - the white haired drummer (click for larger image). I need to research some of the songs that we sang that I did not know.

My first line in Wikipedia

The tv was on showing an old film and suddenly I heard "Nicole?" - "Papa!" and it sounded just like the familiar car advert so I thought it must have been the original inspiration. I checked on Wikipedia but there was no reference - so I added one. If you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papa_%26_Nicole and scroll down to "Trivia" and read the line that begins "The 1966 film..." - that's me!

We see the SOaR man inducted...

Today we saw Keith & Denise (SOaR and holiday club) installed at Mountsorrel Baptist church
There were many from Thorpe Acre congregation there and several said to me that they would never again complain about singing 3 songs one after another at Thorpe Acre because here they had to sing five!
The bun fight afterwards (actually a very nice cream tea) was served on two levels (upstairs and downstairs) so it was hard for Keith & Denise to mingle and meet everyone.

1066 and all that...

We broke our journey to the south coast at St Albans to take in Verulanium and the Abbey. There was a visiting choir singing Evensong in the abbey - technically quite good but not to our (musical) taste
Being fully paid up members of the National Trust we visit as many properties as we can. This one is Batemans - home of Rudyard Kipling.
And so we arrived at our destination - Hastings. In the picture are the "net shops" in the old town built high with a small footprint to minimise the taxes payable and used (originally) for drying and mending nets.
We started exploring and arrived at Bexhill on a sunny day but with a gale force wind blowing. So we found a sea-facing shelter where we were sheltered from the wind but in the sun. There we watched herring gulls dropping mussels from a great height onto the shingle and then diving down quickly to gobble up the exposed flesh before any other birds on the beach stole their food.
Of course we had to visit the site of the "Battle of Hastings" which is confusingly adjacent to the village of Battle and we relived the battle with the help of an audio guide. The abbey was supposedly built as an act of penance for the terrible bloodshed by the winner - William (the Conqueror) and there is a stone set into the ground (supposedly) marking the place where the loser (Harold) got an arrow in the eye.
The rain was never far away on this holiday and when we visited Beachy Head there was no let up so we just grabbed a couple of photos and moved on.
Having joined English Heritage at Battle, we decided to take advantage of the proximity of one of their more recently opened properties - Down House - on our way home. It may have been a mistake to let "Jane" guide us there because we drove a long way on winding, single track roads. The property was the home of Charles Darwin. Thanks once again to an audio guide we are now up to date with how he came by his theory 'On The Origin of Species'.
So we crammed quite a bit into a 5-night holiday (which was a good thing), but we had to contend with quite a bit of rain and some so-so accommodation (which was a bad thing).
